Recording a Great Drum Sound!
I get asked all the time about how to prepare your drum kit for a recording session. There are so many variables to getting a good drum sound I could write a book on the subject. So for the next few newsletters I’ll attempt to offer a range of ideas and advice.
First step: New drum heads!!! I can’t stress enough what a difference a set of new heads will do for your drum sound. Especially on the bass drum and snare drum. These are the two most important sounds of your kit. Get the right drum heads for the job and you’re half way there. Gone are the days of flat, dead sounding drums smothered in reverb. Most good engineers in good studios will want to capture a big, lively and natural sounding drumkit. Getting new drum heads will enhance your kit sound to give it more tone and volume. This will then help it punch through the mix. Pop in anytime and I’ll gladly help you get that drum sound for your recording. All major brands and models in stock!
